COMMON PROPERTY

As a legal entity, the Amherst Woods Homeowners Association (AWHA) owns three parcels of Common Property in woods surrounding lots in the neighborhood. These 3 parcels are shown outlined in yellow on the maps below. Locations are: Parcel 1) behind Woodlot Road; Parcel 2) between Teaberry Lane and Woodlot Road (along the Robert Frost Trail); and Parcel 3) behind Larkspur Drive, Trillium Way, and Foxglove Lane. AWHA also maintains the landscaped islands at the end of all the cul-de-sac streets, as well as the Trillium Way island along Wildflower Drive. These cul-de-sac islands are Town-owned property, but AWHA maintains these areas to enhance neighborhood property values and for the enjoyment of residents.

LANDSCAPING COMMON PROPERTY

In 2019, when the Sewer Extension Project was completed, AWHA Board members worked with Denise Gagnon and Spring Valley Landscape on a design plan to upgrade landscaping on Common Property. The contract for this landscaping plan was divided into two parts, with Part 1 to be installed in spring 2020 and Part 2 to be installed in 2021. However in 2020, no new plantings were done due to the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.  As a result, upgrades planned in Part 1 and Part 2 of the contract were merged, so that all landscape upgrades will take place in spring 2021.

LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE

During the years AWHA had a Property Manager, we did not have a Landscape Committee. The maintenance of Common Property was performed by Spring Valley Landscape with oversight by the Property Manager.  In addition, neighborhood resident Denise Gagnon shared her gardening expertise by volunteering to accompany the landscape contractor on an annual drive through the neighborhood to highlight areas that needed attention and cleanup.

In 2020, at the October AWHA Annual Meeting, a motion was made and passed to form a new Landscape Committee to work on an overall plan with Spring Valley for upgrades to landscaping on Common Property. Starting in January of 2022, Denise Gagnon agreed to head the Landscape Committee and was joined by Nina Korza and Kathleen Teagno to oversee the landscaping in Amherst Woods.

When possible, the Landscape Committee is using native plants in areas that have never been planted or where plants need to be replaced.  In 2022, three Amelanchier (Shadblow) were planted at the corner of Wildflower and Old Farm, as well as on the Foxglove Circle.  In cases where plantings are already established, but one or two of the plants within the planting die, a hardy variety of the original plant is being used.

In 2023, it was determined that it was no longer practical to transport and find a place to store the two non-weatherproof benches that had been placed on the Wildflower/Trillium circle.  The Landscape Committee researched different bench options and ways to secure the benches.  It was determined that a stone bench, that could be left out in the winter and not easily stolen, was the best option.  A stone bench was installed on the Wildflower/Trillium circle in August of 2023.

In 2021, the large Landscaping Upgrade Project was overseen by AWHA Board members. With the help of many NEW volunteers who formed watering committees, the 2021 landscape upgrade project went smoothly.

On June 16, 2021, Part 1 and Part 2 of AWHA's Landscape Upgrade Project provided new plantings for a number of cul-de-sac islands and at the Wildflower Drive Pump Station in Amherst Woods.

AWHA asked for volunteers to water over the hot summer months as the new plantings became established. A number of new volunteers generously offered their time and energy to form "watering teams" to help protect this investment in new landscaping for the entire neighborhood. AWHA wishes to thank the following Water Team volunteers who did a great job all summer long, working together to water the new plants as they became well established:

Woodlot Team: Mary Hoyer, Robin Harris, Clem & Arlene Seldin

Ladyslipper Team: Rob Gardner, Frances Lonergan

Trillium Team: Lynn Focht

Foxglove Team: Mandi Jo Hanneke, Laura Danai

Woodlot Path Team: John Siano, Sig Nilsen

Wildflower Pump Station Team: Christine & Todd Felton, Christie Marsh, Sig Nilsen (back up)
